SUMMARY:[CANCELLED] Service Design Methods: Improving the User Experience Across Touchpoints
DESCRIPTION:Due to sudden and unexpected funding cuts at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)\, this program has been cancelled. I hope funding gets restored. \nHow do you know that your digital library services are meeting the needs and expectations of your customers? In this talk\, provided free of charge for library workers in the state of Florida\, you will learn key service design techniques that focus on optimizing every interaction a customer has with the library—from seamless book checkouts to easy event registrations\, efficient study room bookings\, and simplified access to digital journals. Attendees will learn how to create a more intuitive and cohesive experience across all library touchpoints\, fostering a more accessible and responsive environment for the people it serves.

SUMMARY:Break Down Silos and Scale Impact with Research Operations
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Blakiston and Fan Huang present at Service Design in Government\, a virtual conference out of Scotland for anyone involved in designing\, delivering\, and commissioning public services. \nResearch Operations (ResOps) is well known for providing research tools\, establishing research governance\, and setting standardized procedures. For large organizations\, however\, ResOps can go even further\, helping to break down information silos\, allowing researched information to move across an organization in the same way that IT infrastructure enables information to move across a network. \nApproaching ResOps through the lens of IT infrastructure allows us to design research infrastructures that make research accessible and scalable in government. \nThis presentation will bring practical approaches to the large-scale research and service design most common to government agencies. User research in government requires a greater level of systems thinking\, so we will acknowledge the challenges of that complexity and how particular approaches to ResOps can meet that challenge. \nParticipant takeaways: \n\nPractical approaches to large-scale research\nHow ResOps can enable research to move across an organisation\nDesigning research infrastructure to actively aid effective service design

SUMMARY:Overcoming Barriers to UX Research
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca presents at Designing for Digital. \nLibraries aren’t flush with resources\, and UX research often falls to a small team\, a team of one\, or perhaps no one at all. Barriers appear at every stage: picking a method and designing an effective study (and maybe getting it approved)\, securing incentives and recruiting enough of the right participants\, conducting the research itself\, and then turning findings into actionable next steps. In this talk\, we’ll discuss how to overcome barriers at every stage for more realistic and sustainable research that can happen no matter your role or institution.

SUMMARY:Florida Library Webinars: UX on a Budget
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca presents for Florida Library Webinars. Free registration for Florida library staff only. \nLibraries are often strapped for resources\, and are fortunate if they have anyone on staff dedicated to UX research and design. Many of us try to squeeze UX work in between other duties\, which can leave us feeling both frustrated and exhausted. \nIn this talk\, Rebecca will share methods and experiments she ran with her small yet mighty UX team at the University of Arizona. She’ll also introduce some learnings from her new role at Ad Hoc working to support government agencies\, which are also resource constrained. You’ll leave with ideas on how you can do a lot with a little\, as well as how to advocate for more UX resourcing in the future.

SUMMARY:Charleston Conference Panel: The Workflow Librarian
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Blakiston presents as part of a panel\, “The workflow librarian: Reaching library users where they are.” \nHow do libraries add value for patrons increasingly working outside library-preferred workflows (e.g. searching via Google Scholar)\, and accessing the library’s collection off-campus? This is a question of profound relevance to all library stakeholders – librarians\, publishers\, and patrons alike – and one that must be addressed to maintain mission relevance. It will mean finding new ways of service delivery and service provision that support learning and research not just remotely\, but outside library-preferred workflows. It will mean putting the library ‘in the life of the user’ by designing library services that ‘surface content in the places where users actually are rather than where libraries would like them to be’ (Pinfield et al.\, 2017\, 28). \nThis session will explore this topic using insights from a new\, large-scale survey of librarians and patrons. It will begin with ten-minute presentations from each of the four speakers outlining their perspectives on this topic. This will be followed by a thirty-minute\, moderated audience Q&A structured through a series of themes\, such as: \n\nthe latest trends in patron behavior\nthe practicalities and challenges of inserting the library into user workflows\nthe relevance to the library’s mission and strategic priorities.\n\nThe Q&A will balance audience participation with panel perspectives to ensure a lively discussion on this timely topic.

SUMMARY:A Human-Centered Strategy for Advancing Library Value
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Blakiston delivers the keynote presentation for the Michigan Academic Library Association (MiALA) Annual Conference in Saginaw\, Michigan. \nAcademic libraries are essential contributors to the higher education mission\, supporting student success\, faculty research productivity\, and community engagement. And as the role of the academic library evolves\, we are given countless opportunities to provide value through ever-transforming spaces\, technology\, collections\, programs\, and services that meet the needs and expectations of our students and faculty. Even with resource constraints\, our options are unlimited\, and our potential is huge. In this presentation\, we’ll discuss ways the modern academic library is positioned to provide unique and significant value to our campus communities. Applying a user experience framework\, let’s challenge ourselves to ask: how might we assess\, iterate on\, and build upon our value by focusing in on what really matters the most?
